The Beginning

• The idea of establishing a Catholic University named “Cor Unum” was initially proposed by Emeritus Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Dr. A. O. Gbuji, aiming to represent the unity of all educational activities of the diocese.
• Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, appointed as the provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education, took the initiative to actualize the university project.
• A meeting held on 9 November 2007 officially inaugurated the Planning and Implementation Committee (PIC) chaired by Prof. Julius Onah, consisting of clergy, public officers, and experienced university administrators.
• The PIC swiftly developed critical documents like the Academic Brief, University Law, and Masterplan with the support of Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke.
• The university was later named Godfrey Okoye University (GO University) in honor of Bishop Okoye, who contributed significantly to its establishment.

The First Verification Visit

• On 10 June 2008, the Standing Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU) visited the proposed university’s campus and its permanent site at Ugwuomu-Nike, Enugu, for verification.
• The massive turnout and support from the Enugu Christian Community indicated strong interest and support for the university project.
• SCOPU expressed satisfaction with the progress and advised on finalizing the Masterplan for further approval.

Second Verification Visit

• SCOPU visited again on 11 April 2009, expressing satisfaction with the progress made at the proposed permanent site.
• Prof. Joseph Ikechukwu Chidobem was appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, with other members selected.
• The National Universities Commission granted provisional approval for Godfrey Okoye University to commence operations on 27 October 2009.

Take-Off Arrangements

• Key appointments for the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and other key officers were made.
• The university advertised for admissions, screened candidates, and commenced lectures on 7 December 2009.
• The first matriculation ceremony took place on 13 February 2010, marking the official commencement of academic activities at GO University.
