Examination Structure

PAPER 1: Objective (1 hour)

This paper consists of three sections: Language, Literature, and Culture. It contains a total of sixty multiple-choice questions distributed as follows:

Section A: Language

  • This section includes thirty questions covering various aspects of the Efịk language.
    • Comprehension (10 items): This involves understanding and interpreting two short passages.
    • Composition/Letter Writing (4 items): Questions test the candidate’s ability to write effectively in Efịk.
    • Sound System (4 items): These questions assess knowledge of the phonetics and phonology of Efịk.
    • Word and Sentence Structure (8 items): This involves understanding the grammatical structure of Efịk.
    • Translation (4 items): Candidates are required to translate phrases or sentences.

Section B: Literature

  • This section comprises twenty-two questions divided into:
    • Basic Principles of Literary Appreciation (4 items): Questions on the fundamental concepts of literature.
    • Oral Literature (9 items): Prose (3 items), Poetry (3 items), Drama (3 items).
    • Written Literature (9 items): Prose (3 items), Poetry (3 items), Drama (3 items).

Section C: Culture

  • This section contains eight questions on various aspects of Efịk culture:
    • Customs
    • Institutions

The total marks for Paper 1 are 60.

PAPER 2: Essay (2 hours)

Paper 2 is an essay-based examination divided into three sections: Language, Literature, and Culture. Candidates are required to answer six questions in total: three from Language, two from Literature, and one from Culture.

Section A: Language

  1. Composition/Letter Writing:
    • Candidates should write about 300 words and spend no more than 45 minutes on this section. The topics may include various types of essays such as narrative, descriptive, argumentative, expository, dialogue, debate, and letter writing.
  2. Sound System:
    • Candidates must answer one of two questions. These questions assess knowledge of:
      • Vowels and Consonants: Their production (place and manner of articulation), basic phonetic and phonemic classifications.
      • Syllable Structure: The combination of consonants and vowels in words.
      • Sound Processes: Processes like vowel harmony, assimilation, elision, deletion.
      • Distribution: Occurrence of sounds in different environments (initially, medially, finally).
      • Adaptation of Loanwords.
      • Tone and Intonation: Understanding high, low, falling, and rising tones.
  3. Grammar:
    • Candidates must answer one of two questions. These questions assess knowledge of:
      • Word Structure and Formation: Roots, affixes (prefixes, suffixes), compounding, borrowing, reduplication.
      • Word Classes: Nouns, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, adjectives.
      • Grammatical Categories: Number, person, tense, negation.
      • Phrases and Clauses: Types and functions.

Section B: Literature

This section consists of questions on the set books for both Oral and Written Literature. There will be one question on each of the three set books for Oral Literature and one on each of the three set books for Written Literature, making a total of six questions. Candidates must answer two questions: one from Oral Literature and one from Written Literature.

  1. Oral Literature:
    • Prose: Folktales, legends, proverbs, riddles.
    • Poetry: Songs, ballads.
    • Drama: Traditional drama.
  2. Written Literature:
    • Prose: Novels and short stories.
    • Poetry: Anthologies and individual poems.
    • Drama: Play texts.

Section C: Culture

This section consists of questions on Efịk customs and institutions. Two questions will be set, and candidates must answer one.

  1. Edu Uwem (Customs):
    • Customs and practices related to various aspects of life.
    • Good Upbringing and Its Benefits: The importance of proper upbringing in Efịk culture.
    • Food Customs: Traditional foods and their preparation, such as “enamde kadi,” “enamdi fufu,” “ebokde mme efere,” “etemde ekpaṅ ṅkukwọ.”
    • Libation: The practice and significance of libation in Efịk culture.
  2. Nsionsio Nka (Different Institutions):
    • Family (Ubon/Ekpuk): The structure and importance of family.
    • Worship (Edu Ukpono/Se Ekponode): The role of worship, including deities (Abasi, Ndem), and sacred objects (Ibọk, Mbukpo).
    • Proverbs (Mme Nke): The use and significance of proverbs.
